Basic Geometrical Shapes
There are different geometrical shapes are used in mathematics such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and other polygons.
In this article, we are covering basic geometry shapes, the definition of a polygon, line, line segment, ray, open curves, and closed curves. So let's discuss the various basic geometry shapes-
1.) Line
The line is a straight line whose both ends are free to extend which means a line can extend from both ends. In the picture, line ST is shown.
2.) Ray
Ray is also a straight line that has one end fixed and another end free which means a ray can extend only from one end. In the above picture, ray PQ is shown.
3.) Line segment
The line segment is a straight line that has both endpoints fixed means the line segment can not extend from both ends. In the picture, line segment AB is shown.
4.) Parallel line
Two lines that have an equal distance between them are known as parallel lines. As in the below picture line, P & Q are parallel lines.
5.) Intersecting line
Two straight lines that cut each other at a point are called intersecting lines. In the above picture, red & black lines are intersecting lines because they both are intersecting each other.
6.) Polygon
Polygon is a closed shape that is made up of only line segments. This means it is not made up of a curve.
7.) Curve
The curve is a freehand drawing or an arc. If a curve is not crossing itself then it is known as a simple curve.
There are mainly two types of the curve are-
Open curve
A curve whose both ends are not joined to each other is known as an open curve.
Closed curve
A curve whose both ends are joined to each other is known as a closed curve.
FAQs on Basic Geometric shapes
1.) Line vs line segment
Both ends of the line can extend while both ends of line segments are fixed.
2.) Ray vs line segment
One end is fixed and the other end is free in ray while both ends of line segments are fixed.
3.) What are the line segment shapes?
Shapes that are made from line segments are square, polygon, quadrilateral, etc.
4.) Difference between line, line segment, and ray?
A line segment is a straight line that has two fixed endpoints & we can't extend it to both ends. The line is a straight line that can extend from both ends. A ray is like a line whose one end is fixed and the other is free to extend.
5.) Is a line a geometric shape?
Yes, the line is a geometric shape.
6.) What is a closed figure made of line segments?
Polygon is a closed figure that is made only from line segments.
7.) What are 5 basic geometric shapes?
Basic geometric shapes are line segments, lines, rays, polygons, and curves.
8.) How to find the length of a line segment?
To find the length of any line segment we use the ruler and measure the distance between both ends.
