GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS : Definitions, Pictures & Symbols (PART-1)

INTRODUCTION:-

In Physics many terminologies are used & without these terms, we can't express our thoughts. For better understanding, we will discuss different useful words of physics with pictures.

It will increase our vocabulary. We will learn different keywords of physics like- Force, Work, Velocity, Momentum, Surface tension, etc.

Force

Force is an external effect that produces motion in an object or an effect that may stop the object. The symbol of force is F.

Work

When we act a force on an object & displace it, so it is known as Work. The symbol of work is W.

OR

Below picture showing when we apply an external force on an object & it is moved from its place, so it is known as work.

Force & Work (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Power

The rate of doing work is known as power. The symbol of power is P.
OR
When we do some work on an object then how much work is done in unit time (in one hour, one second or in one minute, etc.) is known as power.

Energy

The capacity to do work is known as energy. The symbol of energy is E.
Energy (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

According to the above picture when person A does more work then its capacity is high & we can say that person A has high energy.

So according to this energy of person B has low energy because of less work.

Friction

The force which opposes the motion is known as friction.
Friction (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)
The above picture showing when we apply an external force on an object then a force that opposes the object from its bottom is known as Friction.

Thrust

Force acting on object surface perpendicularly or at ninety degrees is known as thrust.
Thrust (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Pressure

Thrust on the unit area is called pressure. The symbol of pressure is P.

Pressure (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)
It means when we apply thrust on per unit area like per meter square or per centimeter square etc.

Inertia

The property of an object which tries to remain in a state of rest or state of motion is called its inertia. The symbol of Inertia is I.
Inertia (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

  • The above picture is shown when we apply breaks in the vehicle (bus) then our body moves forward.
  • Because our body & bus have the same speed when the bus is run on the road, after applying a break, the speed of the bus is zero but we are in motion till now.
  • So we move towards the direction of motion.
  • As it is before starts the bus, the bus & our body are in rest, after starting the bus, the bus is in motion but we are in rest, So our body moves backward direction.

Mass

The amount of substance in any object is called its mass. The symbol of mass is m.
OR
It means if the amount of substance in an object is less then its mass is less. As it is if the amount of substance is more then its mass is more.
Mass & Weight (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Weight

Product of mass & gravity at that place is known as its weight. It means if the mass is less then its weight is less & vice versa. The symbol of weight is W.

Distance

The length of the path covered by an object is known as distance. The symbol of distance is s.
Distance & Displacement (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Displacement

The shortest length or distance covered by an object from initial point A to final point B is known as displacement.
Displacement (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Speed

Distance cover by an object per unit time is called speed. The symbol of speed is v.
Speed (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Velocity

Displacement cover by an object per unit time is called velocity. It has a particular direction. The symbol of velocity is v.
Velocity (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Acceleration

Change in velocity with respect to time is known as acceleration. The symbol of acceleration is a.
Acceleration (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

Momentum

The product of mass & velocity of an object is known as its momentum. The symbol of momentum is p.
Momentum (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)

The above picture showing the momentum of a tractor depends on its mass & velocity. As it is the momentum of the rocket is high because it has more mass & velocity.

Surface Tension

The property of the free surface of the liquid tends to occupy a minimum surface area is known as the surface tension of the liquid. The symbol of surface tension is Ïƒ (sigma).

Surface Tension (GLOSSARY OF PHYSICS-Definitions, Pictures & Symbols)
In the above picture, the open surface area of water has an upper layer that is also known as the surface tension of water.

We can see a drop of water tries to minimize its size when we spray water in the air. It shows its surface tension.

CONCLUSION:-

In this blog, we learned definitions of force, power, work, friction, energy, etc. In the next part of the glossary of physics, we will learn more useful terms.
