ACID, BASE & INDICATOR : Difference between Acid & Base ?

Hello, as per the title we need to discuss acid, base & indicator. The first question arising how we may define it? So let's discuss it -

ACID:-

A substance whose taste is sour (khatta) & chemical nature is acidic, such as lemon, orange, curd etc.

BASE:-

A substance whose taste is bitter (kadwa) & chemical nature is basic, when we rub it between our finger we feel soapy. Ex. - baking soda etc.

INDICATOR:-

The substance which is used to identify acid, base & neutral solution. In short, we may separate acid & base with its help. Example:- Litmus, Turmeric (Haldi), & China rose.


How does the indicator helps to identify Acid & Base?

1) How litmus works -

  • Litmus is available in form of paper strip & in solution.
  • After contact between litmus strip & any solution ( test sample ) if litmus strip turns in red colour then the solution is acid.
  • If it turns in blue color then the solution is base.
  • If there is no change then the solution is neutral.

2) How turmeric works -

  • It is used as a paper strip.
  • After contact between turmeric strip & solution ( test sample ) if strip turns in red color then the solution is base.

3) How China rose is used -

  • It is used as a solution.
  • After contact between china rose solution & solution ( test sample ) if it turns in a dark pink color then the solution is acid.
  • If the solution turns in green color then it is base.
